Penso volesse riferirsi al fatto che spera che venga un tempo in cui tutti gli uomini saranno uguali (riferimento alla colonizzazione in India, e a quando ha prestato servizio), ma senza uscire dall'Inghilterra basti pensare che lui ha rinunciato ai suoi vestiti per vivere nella povertà, in modo da poterla comprendere al meglio. Non so se questa risposta è stata esaustiva, io stessa lo sto studiando, ma l'ho interpretata così :)
